Sean Casey has been a Major League player since late in the 1997 season and in 2006 was a member of the Detroit Tigers, who claimed the American League championship before advancing to the World Series. In his first-ever postseason, Casey batted .432 with five doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs in 10 games. During the World Series, he hit a sizzling .529 with two doubles, a pair of homers and five RBIs in five contests. Casey is a .302 career hitter with 278 doubles, 123 home runs and 653 RBIs in 1,193 games.

In 2007, Casey will begin his second year in Detroit. He was acquired by the Tigers midway through the 2006 campaign from the Pittsburgh Pirates after spending eight seasons (1998-2005) as a part of the Cincinnati Reds. While with the Reds, Casey was a three-time National League All-Star (1999, 2001 and 2004) and recipient of the 1999 Hutch Award, named after former player and manager Fred Hutchinson and given annually to an active player who best exemplifies the fighting spirit and competitive desire to win.

During his tenure in Cincinnati, Casey was regarded as very approachable and friendly. He earned the nickname “The Mayor” because of his reputation for chatting casually with every runner who made it to first base and from his very public charity work. He credits his Christian upbringing in Pittsburgh’s affluent Upper St. Clair suburb for his generosity.

A graduate of the University of Richmond (Va.), Casey won a NCAA Division I batting title with a .461 average in 1995. He was drafted that same year by the Cleveland Indians in the second round but was traded to the Reds before the 1998 season.

Casey is a lifelong Catholic who says his faith is the root of who he is as a Christian. He reads the Bible daily and says, “Every day I start with God. My prayer to Him before I take the field is not really that I play well; it’s to remind myself that God is my top priority. He is the key to my life.”

Casey and his wife Mandi have three children: Andrew, Jacob and Carli.
