Craig Biggio is beginning his 20th season as a Major League player in 2007—all with the Houston Astros. Biggio has played in more games (2,709), all with the same team, than any other active player. In Major League history, he ranks second in being hit by a pitch (282), ninth in doubles (637), 16th in at-bats (10,359), 17th in runs scored (1,776) and 25th in games played. A seven-time National League All-Star, the versatile Biggio is the only player in history to appear in the game as a catcher and second baseman. He led the Major Leagues in runs scored during the 1995 and 1997 campaigns and in doubles in 1998 and 1999. Defensively, Biggio has won a Gold Glove Award four times (1994-97) at second base.
Before being selected in the first round (22nd overall) of the 1987 Major League draft, Biggio was a First Team All-American as a junior at Seton Hall University, hitting .407 with 14 homers and 68 RBIs in 1987. He is from Smithtown, N.Y., and a graduate of Kings Park High School. Biggio was the recipient of Major League Baseball’s 1997 Branch Rickey Award for community service. He has been involved with The Sunshine Kids, a support organization for children with cancer and their families, for several years and is active in many other charitable efforts.
Biggio is a lifelong Catholic who was influenced by a priest friend in college at Seton Hall. He says that he feels very blessed for his God-given abilities and understands that he is a role model for youth. Biggio also says that Christ made the ultimate sacrifice for us. He and his wife Patty have three children: sons Conor Joseph and Cavan Thomas, and daughter Quinn Patricia.
